Michael Lee Heacock Jr., 18, of Portage, allegedly threatened to kill one of his two children during a domestic disturbance early Thursday morning.
Portage Police were initially dispatched at approximately 3:15 a.m. Aug. 27 to an apartment in the 6700 block of Dale Avenue following a report of a verbal disturbance. Dispatchers advised that Heacock was allegedly threatening to harm himself and saying he was going to jump onto the highway.
The woman told police the argument began because the couple’s baby was crying. The two children were present inside the apartment during the disturbance.
When officers arrived, Heacock appeared irate and refused to speak with them, police said. He eventually left the apartment on foot after saying he wanted time to “cool off.” The woman remained inside with the two children, and officers cleared the scene after determining the initial incident was a verbal disturbance.
At approximately 3:42 a.m., police were dispatched back to the apartment following a report that Heacock had returned and threatened to kill one of the children.
According to court documents, Heacock had been waiting outside the apartment after officers left. The woman opened the door and allowed him inside, where the two allegedly began arguing again about their children.
One of the two children began crying because Heacock and the woman were yelling, police said. During the argument, Heacock allegedly threatened to harm the child before yelling, “I’ll get rid of her” and “I’ll fucking kill her,” referring to the child.
Heacock then left the apartment on foot. Officers located him near U.S. Highway 20 and Coppes Court and detained him after he again refused to cooperate, police said.
The woman reportedly told officers that Heacock had threatened to harm the children in the past. Police subsequently submitted a report to the Indiana Department of Child Services for assessment.
Heacock was transported and booked into the Porter County Jail.
