Isaiah Antwone Johnson Woods, 20, of Indianapolis, also known as Isaiah Antwone Johnson Wood, allegedly participated in a fatal shooting before repeatedly firing at an unrelated, unarmed customer inside a Gary gas station.
According to a probable-cause affidavit, police responded July 20 to a gas station in the 4500 block of Broadway following reports that multiple people had been shot.
Officers found a man dead on the floor between the front entrance and the counter. Numerous spent shell casings were scattered throughout the store.
Police also recovered two Glock-type handguns fitted with metal switches that rendered the weapons fully automatic. One was found near the store’s coolers, and the other was located outside near the northeast corner of the building.
A preliminary autopsy determined the man died from multiple gunshot wounds. His death was ruled a homicide.
Investigators reviewed interior and exterior surveillance recordings that allegedly captured the shooting. The man who was killed arrived as a passenger in a red sedan, entered the store and purchased several items. He briefly went outside before returning to make additional purchases.
Police said he appeared to be acting casually and did not initially have a weapon drawn or visible.
A black Dodge Charger then stopped directly in front of the store’s entrance. A masked man allegedly got out of the front passenger seat holding a handgun while Woods exited the rear passenger seat wearing a black hoodie with the hood pulled up.
The masked man appeared to say something to Woods before entering the store with the handgun drawn. Woods allegedly scanned the area and followed immediately behind him.
Once inside, the masked man allegedly raised the handgun and pointed it directly at the victim, who was carrying a cellphone, bottles of pop and a scratch-off ticket.
The victim reportedly said, “chill, chill,” dropped the items and ran toward the back of the store in an apparent attempt to escape. Police said Woods pulled a handgun from his hoodie at approximately the same time.
The masked gunman allegedly chased the victim while pointing the handgun at him. The victim then produced a firearm, and the two appeared to begin firing at approximately the same time.
The victim was struck and fell to the floor, causing his handgun to slide away. The masked gunman allegedly continued firing at him while he was on the ground.
Woods also allegedly fired toward the victim in an apparent effort to shoot him and assist the other gunman. Investigators said Woods may have accidentally struck the masked gunman during the exchange.
After firing toward the victim, Woods allegedly turned his attention to an unrelated, unarmed customer who was attempting to escape. Surveillance video reportedly showed Woods opening fire extensively and appearing to shoot repeatedly at the customer’s back as he ran down an aisle.
The customer was shot in the stomach and right arm and suffered graze wounds to his right side. He told investigators he thought he was going to die and called his wife while lying wounded inside the store.
According to court documents, surgeons removed part of the customer’s colon and intestines because of his injuries. He was also scheduled to undergo another surgery on his right arm.
The shooting inside the store unfolded over approximately 15 to 20 seconds. An investigator who reviewed the audio said the firearms used by the deceased man and the masked gunman sounded fully automatic rather than being fired through multiple individual trigger pulls.
The masked gunman allegedly fled from the store while limping and appearing to have been shot in the leg. Police said he appeared to drop his handgun outside near the northeast corner of the building.
Gunfire also erupted outside the store. An occupant of a nearby SUV allegedly began firing toward the entrance after observing the attack inside. Another man who had arrived in the Charger allegedly returned fire and struck a window on the SUV.
Investigators described a second exchange of gunfire involving Woods, the wounded masked gunman and the SUV’s occupant before the SUV drove away.
Woods allegedly ran north from the gas station through an alley. The other three men regrouped in a wooded area behind the business and discussed leaving before police arrived.
One of the men retrieved the Charger, and the group allegedly fled without Woods.
Surveillance video from a local hospital reportedly showed three of the men arriving in the Charger. One later admitted moving the vehicle away from the hospital to prevent police from recovering it. Gary Police subsequently located the Charger abandoned elsewhere in the city.
The other alleged gunman was transferred to a Chicago hospital for treatment but reportedly left against medical advice after saying he had “a plane to catch.”
Court records show Woods was convicted of armed robbery in September 2024, making him a serious violent felon under Indiana law.
