Crown Point Police Update On Shooting & Crash
On 02/25/2020 at 12:42 a.m, Crown Point Police were dispatched to the 200 block of E. 124th Ave. for a vehicle that had just struck a house, Assistant Police Chief Jim Janda stated. This was shortly after the Lake County Sheriff’s Department was dispatched to a call of shots fired in the area of the 12500 block of Van Buren St., which is just west of the crash.
Upon officers arrival to the area it was discovered that the driver of the vehicle, Antonio F. Giannetta, 19 of Schererville, appeared to be highly intoxicated, Janda said. Gianetta was traveling N/E bound on Connecticut St. when he left the roadway and struck a small tree before striking the house, along with a car parked in the driveway of the residence. Giannetta was not injured as a result of the crash.
Residents who were outside advised officers that they had heard several gun shots right before the crash. Officers discovered a loaded handgun, with a spent shell casing stuck in the firearm, inside the suspect’s vehicle. During a canvass of the area, several 40 caliber shell casings were discovered near the crash scene which matched the caliber of the handgun located in the suspect’s vehicle.
Giannetta was taken into custody, without incident, and housed at the Lake County Jail for Operating a Vehicle While Intoxicated and Criminal Recklessness. More charges are expected pending further investigation of the incident, Janda stated.
