LAKE COUNTY – An Illinois man was arrested Thursday night after allegedly driving under the influence and crashing into a parked Indiana State Police patrol vehicle along Interstate 80, injuring a trooper and a police intern.
According to Indiana State Police, the crash occurred around 11:15 p.m. on October 29, 2026, as Trooper Brayden Schrock was conducting traffic enforcement along eastbound I-80 near the 1.4-mile marker, just east of the Illinois state line near Indianapolis Boulevard.

Schrock was parked on the inside shoulder in a fully marked patrol vehicle when a black Infiniti SUV traveling at a high rate of speed struck the patrol car from behind.
The impact caused extensive damage to the rear and driver’s side of the patrol vehicle. Responding troopers found the Infiniti disabled and blocking multiple lanes of the interstate.

The driver of the Infiniti was identified as Christopher T. Idom, 34, of Blue Island, Illinois.
During the crash investigation, troopers observed several signs of possible impairment, including bloodshot, watery eyes and the odor of an alcoholic beverage.
Police said Idom refused field sobriety testing, a portable breath test and a chemical test after being advised of Indiana’s Implied Consent Law. Investigators subsequently obtained a search warrant through the Lake County court system authorizing a blood draw, which was conducted at a local hospital.
Idom was then transported to the Lake County Jail, where he was booked on preliminary charges of Operating While Intoxicated Endangering, Operating While Intoxicated (First Offense), and Operating a Vehicle with a Suspended Registration.
He was also cited for Unsafe Lane Movement and Operating Without Financial Responsibility.
Trooper Schrock and an Indiana State Police intern riding with him at the time of the crash were both transported to a hospital with minor injuries. Both were treated and released.
All charges are allegations, and Idom is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
