Gary — A death investigation is underway after officers with the Gary Police Department discovered a deceased adult male inside a residence Sunday afternoon under suspicious circumstances.
According to authorities, officers were dispatched at approximately 4:01 p.m. on April 12, 2026, to the 2200 block of Rhode Island Street to conduct a welfare check. Upon entering the home, officers located an adult male deceased. Police say initial observations at the scene raised concerns, prompting an immediate and ongoing investigation.

During the investigation, it was determined the decedent’s vehicle was missing from the residence. That vehicle was later located in the possession of a person of interest, who has since been identified and is currently being held at the Lake County Jail.
Radio traffic described the person of interest attempting to flee from a Westville Police officer, leading to a pursuit that ended on Interstate 94 near the 26-mile marker. The pursuit was brought to a stop after a Town of Porter police officer executed a PIT maneuver, successfully disabling the vehicle and taking the individual into custody.

The identity of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of family and further investigation by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Investigators with the Lake County Homicide Task Force are actively working to determine the circumstances surrounding the death. At this time, officials say the incident appears to be isolated, and there is no known threat to the public.
