Hammond Man Shot In East Chicago and Two Others Detained

On Thursday, December 26 at approximately 1:35pm one of our patrol officers advised dispatch that he heard gunshots coming from west of Main Street, along with the Shot Spotter alerting to the area of 3902 E. 139th Street, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera of the East Chicago Police Department. Officers proceeded to the area where the shots were being fired and were waved down by a witness. The witness advised officers that a silver vehicle that may have been involved left the area toward Euclid Avenue, Rivera told Region News. As officers were relaying the information another officer advised that he saw a vehicle fitting the description speeding in the direction of St. Catherine’s Hospital. Officers pulled up to the silver vehicle as it stopped in front of the emergency room. Officers located a victim in the vehicle that had a gunshot wound to the left thigh and left knee.

The victim was identified by Police as a 19-year-old from Hammond, Indiana. Inside the vehicle was also another 19-year-old of East Chicago and a 17-year-old male from East Chicago. The victim’s vehicle was impounded due to officers observing two handguns and several spent shell casings inside the vehicle. The 19-year-old & the juvenile were brought into the station for questioning.

Detectives are actively working on this case and more information will be forthcoming as this investigation continues Rivera stated. We will update on this story as information becomes available.
