Thursday morning, police officers with the U.S. Marshals Service attempted to serve an arrest warrant at a home in the 700 block of Matthews Street in Gary where they believed a wanted man was inside. As they attempted to execute the warrant, a male subject inside the home allegedly opened fire on them, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez Jr.

At approximately 7:30 a.m., the Marshals Service requested the assistance of the Lake County Sheriff’s Department SWAT Team along with Gary Police SWAT.

Gary Police officers assisted federal agents with securing a perimeter around the residence. The Gary Police Department’s SWAT team was also placed on standby to provide additional support if necessary.

During the operation, the Gary Police Department deployed its drone unit to assist SWAT personnel with clearing the interior of the residence. While conducting a search, an individual inside the home struck the drone, confirming the suspect’s presence within the residence.

After the suspect refused multiple law enforcement requests for him to surrender, the Lake County SWAT team used an armored vehicle to breech the home; pushing through a door and removing windows. The suspect eventually approached a window with his hands up and he was taken into custody. No one was injured, Martinez said.
