Officers Shot At During Pursuit Vehicle Later Found In Hammond
On July 18, 2020 approximately 5:34 PM Gary Police Officers attempted a traffic stop on a blue Chevy Impala, occupied by two individuals, near West 24th Avenue and Colfax Street, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield of the Gary Police. The vehicle refused to stop then fired two shots in the air while turning onto Colfax Street, Westerfield said. As officers pursued the vehicle the male driver fired multiple shots at the officers behind him. The officers were in their vehicle and no officer was injured. The vehicle continued to flee from officers eventually entering the expressway. The Impala traveled westbound at an extremely high rate of speed and officers terminated the pursuit for public safety.
Just after 6:00 PM officers form the Lake County Sheriff’s Department located the suspect vehicle in Hammond Indiana. The vehicle was unoccupied and a weapon was recovered from the vehicle. The vehicle has been listed as stolen out of Calumet City Illinois since May of this year, Westerfield said. There was also a stolen Indiana license plate on the vehicle.
