Kervel V. Williams, 40, of Gary, is facing charges in LaPorte County after authorities allege he attempted to traffic contraband into the Westville Correctional Facility.
According to court documents, prison officials on May 18, 2026, contacted investigators after a civilian was reportedly observed near the east fence line of the prison carrying what appeared to be a large bag of contraband. Authorities said prison personnel used a drone that detected a heat signature and tracked the individual moving south near the facility.
Law enforcement responded to the area of County Road 600 South west of U.S. 421 to assist correctional staff. Officials alleged the suspect discarded the suspected contraband while moving through a tree line and adjoining cornfield. Officers later identified the individual as Williams.
Court records state correctional staff and deputies entered the cornfield in vehicles to block Williams’ movement while another officer attempted to intercept him on foot. Authorities alleged Williams initially failed to comply with commands to stop and get on the ground. Investigators said an officer drew a Taser, at which point Williams allegedly dropped to the ground and was taken into custody without further incident.
Investigators said the following items were recovered during the investigation:
4,804.8 grams of tobacco
120 grams of THC
22.2 grams of chewing tobacco
37.3 grams of synthetic marijuana
Six cellular devices, including Motorola and BLU phones
Two white tank tops
One Fila tennis shoe allegedly left in a field
Authorities allege the items were intended to be delivered to an inmate at the Westville Correctional Facility.
Lodged in the Laporte County Jail.
