East Chicago Police Determine Sunday’s Shooting A Suicide
On Sunday December 6, at approximately 9:14 AM East Chicago Police officers responded to a call of a man down at 3601 Grand Blvd, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera of The East Chicago Police.
Upon Officers arrival they discovered a male Hispanic in his early 20’s lying on the grass in front of 3601 Grand Blvd. The male was unresponsive and suffered at least one gunshot wound to the head area. He was pronounced deceased on scene by responding medics.
The deceased victim was identified as 21 year old Angel Castaneda of East Chicago. The victim was a prime suspect in a homicide and shooting that occurred in our city over the summer and he had active warrants for felony domestic battery and carrying a handgun without a permit, according to Rivera. Las Vegas Detectives were also in contact with our Criminal Investigation Division regarding our victim being a suspect in a shooting in their city as well.
On Monday December 7, 2020 Detective Carina Acevedo recovered video footage from the area of 3600 Grand Blvd. The video footage clearly shows our victim walking on the 3600 block of Grand Blvd at approximately 9:11 AM then sitting down in the grass area in front of 3601 Grand Blvd. Once the victim sat down he shot himself in the head, Rivera stated. Patrol Officers arrived on scene at approximately 9:14 a.m. and discovered the victim after responding to a call of a man down in the area.
A semi-automatic Glock handgun and 1 spent shell casing were recovered from the crime scene. The surveillance footage and the evidence collected on scene all indicate that this was a suicide.
