Apartment Fire In Calumet City Injures Multiple People
On June 12, 2021 at approximately 5:17 AM, Calumet City Fire and Police personnel responded to the first block of 158th Place for a report of a fire alarm, according to Fire Chief Glenn Bachert. Dispatch upgraded the alarm to a structure fire while crews were enroute.
Calumet City Fire and Police personnel arrived on scene and discovered a 3 story 12 unit building engulfed in flames. Calumet City Fire and Police personnel immediately began a coordinated effort to rescue and evacuate all occupants of the multi-unit apartment building, spokesman for Calumet City said. First in companies reported heavy fire on first floor extended to the third floor. Six residents were rescued from the third floor by ground ladders, Bachert said. All occupants were evacuated, and three people were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries reported.
Calumet City Fire officials received mutual aid from surrounding fire departments who assisted in extinguishing the fire. Fire personnel were able to extinguish the flames, while keeping the fire from spreading throughout the building.
A preliminary investigation by fire officials indicates the fire was accidental in nature. The fire alarm system was in working order and alerted emergency personnel of the fire.
The American Red Cross is on scene assisting in disaster relief for affected residents.
