Charges Filed In Cal Township Double Homicide
Detectives investigating a double homicide of two teenagers in Calumet Township last fall, have arrested three people who are facing numerous charges. Dawn M. Carden “Mama D” questioned 18 year old Elijah Robinson multiple times in regards to a missing gun she believed him or his friend had stolen from her.
On October 16th, 2020, Elijah and his friend, 17 year old Maxwell Kroll, were found deceased in the basement of a home on the 3900 block of West 51st Avenue, both victims had sustained gunshot wounds. A 9mm casing was found underneath Maxwell’s body. Elijah and Maxwell were friends with Dawn Carden’s son, and on August 27th all three were involved in a traffic stop with the Crown Point Police Department where a 9mm handgun was collected. A witness that visited Dawn’s residence stated that there are several weapons just “out in the open” and Carden and her boyfriend, Alvino S Amaya, sell them to people. Dawn Carden admitted she sold edible marijuana and other narcotics “just to get by,” she also stated she holds Ecstasy for the boys and breaks off pieces of molly for them.
A witness told police about a suspicious Facetime call with Robinson the night before his death. After falling asleep on Facetime, at approximately 3:30am, the witness awoke to the sound of a male yelling “where’s the gun?” The victim, Elijah Robinson, began to cry and responded he did not have it. The witness recognized the male yelling as Alvino Amaya’s. Shortly after the shouting the call went silent and the witness couldn’t hear anything else. The next morning is when the two teens were found.
Multiple search warrants on Carden’s and Amaya’s property, including a storage unit on 29th Avenue, detectives confiscated multiple firearms, ammunition and firearm accessories. When questioned about the storage unit Dawn admitted to taking the containers there, but said Alvino told her not to look inside them. Dawn advised it must have been Alvino and 19 year old Elijah D. Robinson, the suspect, who put the guns inside the containers. When Elijah D. Robinson was questioned, he advised on the night of October 15th, overhearing Dawn and Alvino discuss the missing gun and going to look for it. He stated he was at Carden’s residence that night to watch her father and he eventually fell asleep. Elijah, the suspect, said when he woke up Alvino wasn’t there. In another interview, Elijah D. Robinson admitted to police he did leave that night to go to the victims’ house with Amaya.
A ballistic report shows that the casing found at the crime scene came from a weapon that was recovered during the search warrant at Carden’s storage unit. The weapon, a Taurus 9mm, belonged to Dawn Carden.
42-year-old Dawn Carden faces two counts of murder, two counts of dealing in a narcotic drug and two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
36-year-old Alvino Amaya also faces two counts of murder. Officers with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and agents with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms arrested Carden and Amaya December 18th. Carden and Amaya are being held in the Porter County Jail on federal charges.
