Crash Closes 80/94 Friday

A maintenance unit from the INDOT LaPorte Sub District had a close call today, according to Indiana Department of Transportation: Northwest.

While performing maintenance activities on I-94 east of U.S. 421 Friday, an attenuator and INDOT truck were struck by a semi. An attenuator truck acts as a protective cushion device intended to absorb high-energy kinetic impact.

The attenuator was destroyed and truck damaged, coming to rest on the right shoulder, INDOT said in a release Friday. The semi and other crash debris ended up across the travel lanes, while a passenger vehicle also involved ended up on the left shoulder. This caused all possible lanes of travel to be blocked while crews worked to remove the vehicles and debris.

The attenuator did its job and the crew members were uninjured. The driver of the semi was transported for non life threatening injuries, according to Indiana State Police Sgt. Glen Fifield.

“Always be on the lookout for roadway crews, and be prepared to slow down and move over to give them room to work,” INDOT said.
