Crews Work Fatal Apartment Fire Overnight
The Hammond Fire Department was dispatched to a structure fire on the 9th floor of an apartment complex in the 500 block of Michigan in Hammond around 2:50 AM Thursday.
On arrival of first responding crews they were met with heavy flames coming from the window on the 9th floor. After a search of the floor firefighters discovered a deceased individual.
As of 4:15 AM crews are breaking down the equipment and the Lake County Coroner has arrived on scene. It is believed at this time around 15 others have been displaced temporarily from the 9th & 10th floors. Red Cross has been notified.
