Dealership Employee Saves Woman In Highland House Fire

An elderly woman was saved by bystanders Saturday afternoon while she was in the shower and her house was burning. Neighbors and car dealership employees from Webb Hyundai of Highland noticed the smoke & flames and rushed over. The fire occurred on the 9200 block of Spring St in Highland around 5:30pm. Neighbors and rescuers believe the fire started in the kitchen area from a crock pot cooking dinner. Alfonso Hernandez an employee at Webb Hyundai of Highland rushed over and kicked the door in and located the elderly lady in the bathroom who didn’t realize her house was on fire. Hernandez wrapped her in a blanket and got her and a dog out to safety, he told RNS.
When fire crews arrived on scene flames were shooting through the rear roof and possibly being fed from a gas main broken, according to radio traffic. The home was damaged pretty good from the fire and water. It is believed the homeowner will be staying with family until repairs can be made. Highland Fire Chief Bill Timmer stated, the fire is under investigation and the crock pot theory has not been proven. Highland Fire Department received Mutual Aid from Munster Fire Department and Griffith Fire Department.
