Driver Arrested In Fatal Hit & Run In Merrillville
On Saturday, August 6, 2022 at approximately 11:43 PM, Merrillville Police responded to a traffic accident involving a vehicle and a pedestrian which occurred in the area of the 5600 block of Broadway, according to Merrillville Police.
A Merrillville PolIce Officer who was in the immediate area, observed the accident and immediately summoned medics and fire personnel to assist the female pedestrian. The officer was able to catch up to the vehicle, which did not stop at the scene, and was able to perform a traffic stop and identify the driver of the suspect vehicle, Police told RNS.
Additional officers and emergency personnel arrived on scene to assist with the investigation and to preserve the scene. The female pedestrian was subsequently transported by helicopter to the University of Chicago for emergency medical treatment and evaluation but later succumbed to her injuries. The Cook County Medical Examiner identified the pedestrian as IECSHA BRADSHAW, 39, of Gary.
The driver of the vehicle, identified as Olivia Magana, was subsequently transported to the Lake County Jail and was later charged with Leaving the Scene of an Accident Resulting in Death or Catastrophic Injury.
The investigation is ongoing and further details will be provided as they become available, police said.
