East Chicago Fire Burns Grocery Store and Two Apartments

Shortly before 3pm Tuesday East Chicago Fire Department responded to a Structure Fire at 149th & Baring. On arrival crews encountered heavy smoke and flames, East Chicago Fire Assistant Chief Carlos Aburto told RNS. The building was a local grocery store (Baring Foods) and housed two apartments as well that were occupied. The owner of the store believed the fire started in the basement. No reported injuries at this time. Aburto said with these older buildings fire has tendency to get into the walls and makes it more challenging to extinguish. Crews did an excellent job of knocking the fire out, Aburto said. The Fire is under investigation.
