Fatal Crash On 80/94 After Truck Stalls

Sunday morning at 7:47 a.m., the Indiana State Police Lowell Regional Dispatch Center received a 911 call of a disabled semi-truck on I-80/94 EB 3.9 mile-marker.  Approximately one minute later, a report of a serious crash occurred involving the disabled truck, according to Sgt. Glen Fifield of The Indiana State Police.

Preliminary investigation by Trooper James Brasseur shows that a green 1996 Peterbilt pulling an empty trailer, was eastbound in the 2nd lane when the vehicle lost air pressure to its brakes.  As a result, the driver was unable to move the truck from the lane.  A silver 2020 Chevrolet Malibu was also eastbound in the 2ndlane when that driver apparently failed to recognize the stopped vehicle and rear-ended the trailer.  This impact cause catastrophic damage to the Chevrolet, Fifield said.  The driver of the car did not survive injuries sustained in the crash and was pronounced deceased at the scene by the Lake County Coroner’s Office.

Identification and notification of next of kin is being handled by the Lake County Coroner and was not immediately available.  The right two lanes were closed for several hours for crash investigation and scene cleanup.

Assisting at the scene were the following:  Hammond Fire Department, INDOT, Hoosier Helpers, ISP Lowell Crash Reconstruction Team and WAFFCO Towing.
