Fire At EC Carmelite Home Sunday
Around 1PM Sunday East Chicago, Gary and Hammond Fire Departments responded to a structure fire at the Carmelite Home located at 4840 Grasselli St in East Chicago.
On arrival of crews flames were coming through the roof near the center of the building. Everyone was evacuated according to reports and there were no injuries to residents RNS was made aware of. The roof later collapsed as fire crews worked to extinguish the large fire. Smoke could be seen for miles across the region. The portion of the building destroyed housed dozens of young women. The Red Cross was on scene helping those in need.
The North Township Office is accepting donations of clothing, gift cards and other items any of the 27 residents could use that were displaced. “Starting Monday, we’ll be opening my North Township Trustee offices in Hammond (5947 Hohman) and East Chicago (2100 Broadway) as donation centers for the following items – boys’ and girls’ clothing (sizes M thru XL), personal care items, pull-ups, gift cards (Walmart, Target, Visa, Shoe Carnival), water, juice, snacks, or whatever you may find it in your heart to give,” North Township Trustee Adrian Santos said.
