Firefighters Battle Massive Apartment Fire Overnight

Dozens of residents displaced after an apartment building fire in Schererville overnight.

The fire was reported around 11 PM, Thursday, in the 2100 block of Sherwood Lake Drive, which is near the SW corner of 30 & 41. The size of the building and the number of occupants prompted a massive fire response from surrounding departments immediately.

Schererville Police Officers arrived first on scene and began alerting residents inside. One resident described to RNS not hearing a fire alarm but being suddenly rushed out of the building by firefighters at their door, unaware what was occurring.

Firefighters battled the blaze for nearly 8 hours and at ran into trouble with water supply & pressure issues which hindered quick efforts to stop the blaze from spreading.

It’s unclear at this hour how many people were displaced exactly but the Red Cross was called in to assist those residents. The building appeared to be a total loss.

There was no word of injuries early Friday morning to residents or firefighters. Crews were back on scene Friday morning after a small rekindle.
