Gary Announces New Interim Police Chief From ISP

Gary Mayor Jerome A. Prince today announced Indiana State Police Major Jerry
Williams will serve as the Interim Chief of the Gary Police Department.

Mayor Prince hailed Chief Williams as “clearly the right person for the job at the right time. “I’m excited to have Chief Williams on board to guide our police department in new directions,” Mayor Prince said. “Jerry has a proven record of leadership and integrity. He’s been an integral part of our work in improving the Gary Police Department for our officers, residents and businesses.” Mayor Prince also said he will rely on Chief Williams to determine the Gary Police Department’s leadership plans over the long term.

Indiana State Police Superintendent Douglas Carter said, his department has worked very closely with and has completed a tremendous amount of work in collaboration with the City of Gary and the Gary Police Department over the last nine months. “We will continue to work alongside and support Chief Jerry Williams and his administration as we have with his predecessors. I will continue to offer any and all resources of the ISP to Chief Williams as he works to move this proud agency forward, creating new cornerstones for the future of this department and its service to the citizens of Gary.”

Chief Williams praised the Gary Police Department’s sworn officers and civilian staff for the commitment to protecting and serving the City of Gary. “There are some extremely talented officers and civilian staff working here, and my intention is to find those officers and incorporate them into the department’s future,” Chief Williams said. “As for our officers, in the last eight months, l’ve seen firsthand the opportunities that exist within this agency. I’ve been placed in this position for you, not for me. Together, we
will help the Gary Police Department reach its full potential.”
