Gary Commander Hit Head On In Crash Wednesday

On April 03, 2024 at approximately 9:36 AM, Gary Police Department received a call for service reference a white SUV that was driving recklessly east bound on 5th Ave from Burr Street. Caller advised the vehicle was weaving in and out of traffic as it continued eastbound on 5th Ave, according to Gary Police.

At approximately 9:37 AM, a Gary Police Patrol Commander was westbound on 5th Ave, from Bigger Street when a white SUV crossed the center median and struck the Gary Police vehicle head on causing a chain reaction of events. A vehicle traveling westbound behind the Gary Police vehicle was unable to stop and crashed into the police vehicle along with several other vehicles. The five-vehicle crash including a semi-truck as well, which was traveling westbound. Other Gary Police Officers arrived on scene along with Gary Fire Department.

Gary Fire Department transported three of the drivers to Methodist Northlake for treatment. Lake County Police Department arrived on scene and are currently working the crash scene Investigation, along with Gary Police Department CSI.
