Gary Man Charged After Shooting Gun In Griffith

On Tuesday, 2/14/2023, the Griffith Police Department responded to a report of gunshots near 100 E Ridge Rd. Upon arrival, it was determined that a lone male subject drove to the location, then proceeded to walk around the building while simultaneously shooting a handgun twice into the air. The subject also pulled on the door of an unoccupied business prior to leaving, Griffith Police stated in a release.

No entry was made into the business, and no one was hurt in the incident.

Video obtained from area businesses, other data derived from law enforcement related technologies, and assistance provided by the Gary Police Department assisted Detective John Mowery in identifying the suspect, within 24 hours, as Kevon Gibson, a 22-year-old resident of Gary.

Through the investigation it was learned that Gibson was under court ordered electronic monitoring. With ICU Monitoring, Inc.’s help, Gibson was found and taken into custody without incident in Gary, IN, on 2/16/23.
Gibson later provided a statement to Detective Mowery admitting to possessing a handgun and firing it, as reported by witnesses, in Griffith. Gibson further offered that the act was random and that he carried no animosity toward the area’s businesses or their employees.

Gibson was subsequently charged with Criminal Recklessness (Level 6 Felony) and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun (Class A Misdemeanor) by the Lake County Prosecutor’s Office.
