Go Kart Pursuit Ends With One In Custody
On Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at approximately 12:33 AM, a police officer with the Lake County Sheriff’s Department was traveling in the area of Grant Street and 37th when he observed what appeared to be a male subject lying in the middle of the southbound lanes of travel on Grant Street between Ridge Road and 37th Avenue, according to Lake County Sheriff Oscar Martinez.
The Officer conducted a u-turn at which time officer observed it was a male subject that had rolled his go-kart and was now trying to flip it back onto its four wheels. The Officer positioned his patrol vehicle behind the subject and the go-kart and activated emergency lights to block southbound traffic. As the officer exited his vehicle and approached the driver of the go-kart, the driver accelerated and fled, heading eastbound on 37th Avenue. The officer pursued the go-kart, which was traveling at a high rate of speed, Martinez said.
At 39th Avenue, the go-kart motor stopped and its driver attempted to restart it. The officer ordered the subject to stop and lie on the ground, but the subject made another attempt to pull start the go-cart. The officer warned the subject that he would be tased if he did not stop and lie on the ground, but the subject continued to disregard the officer’s orders. The officer was forced to deploy his Taser and the subject fell to the ground and was placed into custody.
The suspect was evaluated at the scene by Gary Emergency Medical Services, but refused further treatment. He was taken to the Lake County Jail, where medical staff denied his entry due to minor injuries including scrapes to his face which needed medical attention. He was transported to Methodist Southlake Hospital for treatment. He was medically cleared and is currently in custody at the Lake County Jail.
The suspect is identified as 37-year-old Raymond J. Sons, of Gary. He faces a charge of resisting law enforcement with a vehicle.
