Hammond SWAT Called In After Shots Fired
On December 12th, at approximately 9:25 p.m., Hammond police were dispatched to an apartment complex located at 5111 Sohl Ave in reference to shots fired following a domestic dispute in one of the upstairs apartments, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police.
Officers arrived and spoke with a female who stated she was in an argument with her 45-year-old friend/roommate when she told him to leave. The victim states that the male became agitated and stated he was going to shoot her and any police that came to the residence. The victim stated that the male retrieved a revolver type handgun from the bedroom and fired it at her head twice. The victim states that the firearm did not go off at first. She stated that the suspect hit the gun at which point it discharged into the floor of the apartment, Kellogg said. The victim was able to kick the suspect and run out of the apartment unharmed.
Hammond SWAT and Hostage Negotiators responded to the scene and attempted to make contact with the suspect. After several attempts to speak with the male subject inside of the apartment were unsuccessful, just before 2 a.m., tear gas was deployed in an attempt to remove the subject from the apartment. Upon checking the residence, the subject was not located inside. Police continued to search for the subject in the nearby area and at approximately 4:00 a.m., he was located hiding under a staircase nearby the residence, Kellogg stated. The subject was taken into custody.
The suspect has now been identified as 45 year old, Eric Barkey of Hammond. Barkey has now been charged with Attempted Burglary, Intimidation, Battery by means of a deadly weapon, Criminal recklessness, and Attempted residential entry.
