Hazmat Responds To Bank In Dyer
Dyer Fire Department and Lake County Hazmat Respond To Chase Bank
At 4:18 PM, on February 9, 2024, the Dyer Fire Department (DFD) was dispatched to Chase Bank located at 799 Joliet Avenue in response to reports of an odor in the building and employees feeling lightheaded. Upon arrival, DFD crews identified a mixture of strong cleaning supplies causing a chemical reaction.
DFD personnel promptly evacuated the facility and contacted the Lake County Hazardous Materials Team for assistance from their advisors. The incident was determined to be the result of a lapse in judgment by an employee of a contracted cleaning agency.
Fire and EMS crews assessed all occupants, and no medical services were required.
Dyer Fire and Hazmat officials worked collaboratively to mitigate the situation, and a remediation contractor was engaged to remove and properly dispose of the chemicals, according to Dyer Fire Department.
There is no threat to the environment or public safety.
This incident serves as a reminder to never mix substances that may cause a chemical reaction and to always dispose of chemicals properly at designated hazardous waste disposal sites. For more information, please visit: https://www.lcswmd.com/
