Highland Police Recover Carjacked Jeep Overnight

Around 11:00 PM Monday, a Highland Police Officer observed a White Jeep Grand Cherokee driving fast for weather conditions, according to Commander John Banasiak of The Highland Police.

The officer got behind the Jeep to run the registration and found it to be stolen, Banasiak told RNS.  This vehicle was carjacked around 2/3/2021 in Markham, IL., police later learned. The officer then attempted to initiate a traffic stop on the Jeep and it continued without stopping. The vehicle drove into the Hampton In Highland apartment complex, Banasiak said.

In the Hampton’s parking lot the officer observed the vehicle to be turning within the route of travel in the lot and it slid on the snow/ice. The Jeep became stuck on the a pile of snow and a fence.  The driver then fled wearing all black clothing.  Highland Officers followed prints in the snow into one of the apartment buildings but didn’t locate the suspect, Banasiak said.

Upon further investigation, officers obtained some suspect information via evidence found in the Jeep. Those results are currently pending processing and this is still an active investigation.

At this time RNS believes this Jeep was carjacked and shots were fired during that incident. No further information was given at this time.
