Update On EC Detective Shot This Week

On Sunday February 07, 2021 at approximately 7:00 p.m. Detective Jeffrey Sanchez, a 5 year veteran of the East Chicago Police Department was off duty and picking up a pizza on the 4700 block of Indianapolis Blvd, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera of The East Chicago Police.

Detective Sanchez was shot 5 times by two individuals unknown to him after a verbal altercation had occurred prior to the shots being fired. Detective Sanchez was able to return fire striking one of the suspects. One suspect is in custody at the Lake County Sheriff Department and the second suspect is being treated for his gunshot wounds at the University of Chicago Hospital.

Detective Sanchez has had two successful surgeries to repair the damage done by the rounds that struck his intestines and bowel area. He still has another surgery scheduled and a long recovery ahead of him. Currently Detective Sanchez is in critical but stable condition in an Intensive Care Unit at a Chicago area hospital.

The Lake County Sheriff Department is investigating the shooting and details that lead up to the shooting. We will have a full update on those circumstances tonight. A Go Fund Me page is set up to assist Detective Sanchez with his medical and living expenses.
