Hobart Crash Leaves 3 Injured & 1 Airlifted

A head on collision shortly after 11:30am on E 73rd & Grand Blvd in Hobart left three injured, according to Assistant Chief John Reitz of the Hobart Fire Department. Hobart Police initially arrived on scene and noticed two occupants inside of a Chevy Equinox, who had injuries and the other vehicle a Chevy Suburban with one occupant who was also injured, according to Captain James Gonzales of The Hobart Police. One patient, the passenger of the Equinox, was airlifted by UCAN Helicopter to a Chicago Trauma Center in critical condition, the driver was transported to St. Anthony Trauma in critical condition by Superior, and the other driver was transported to St. Mary’s in stable condition by Hobart Fire, Reitz told Region News.  

The Lake County Reconstruction Team responded to the scene and were assisting with the investigation of the traffic crash, Gonzales stated.

Preliminary statements from witnesses stated the Equinox was traveling Northbound on Grand BLVD approaching the intersection, the driver of the Equinox disregarded the stop sign and continued to travel North when the vehicle collided head-on with the Suburban in the intersection at 73rd and Grand BLVD, Gonzales said.

The occupants inside of the Equinox are Hobart residents and the driver of the Suburban is also a Hobart resident.

Hobart Fire thanked Merrillville Police Department, Lake County Sheriffs, UCAN, Superior Ambulance, and Lake County 911 Dispatch.
