House Fire Destroys East Chicago Home During City Council Meeting
A house fire shortly after 6:30pm on 138th & Deodar in East Chicago left one two story home significantly damaged Monday. The fire broke out shortly after the EC City Council vote for firefighters ironically.
When firefighters arrived they encountered heavy smoke and flames from the second story of the home. Region News spoke with the home owner who told us a small portable space heater tipped over and quickly ignited a mattress. The home owner attempted to extinguish the blaze with a 5 gallon bucket but the fire spread to fast he stated. East Chicago called Gary FD for mutual aid during the blaze. East Chicago Fire Chief Anthony Serna told Region News no injuries were reported and only one occupant was home at the time.
