Update on Munster Shooting Monday Night

A usually quiet area of the Region quickly turned to chaos and violence according to witnesses Monday night on the 8000 block of Calumet Ave in Munster at a strip mall parking lot.

Munster Police and Fire were dispatched for an alleged gun shot victim around 10:30pm near Wendy’s. When police arrived and saturated the area seconds later they determined a shooting actually took place across the street at Munster Tobacco & Hookah. Police have confirmed To RNS however no injuries occurred from this incident. One witness nearby reported seeing a man running from the lot and rolling over the sidewalk on Calumet Ave losing his shoes as he was escaping the gunfire.

A red Jeep SUV could be seen crashed into an Audi in front of Munster Tobacco with numerous bullet holes in it as well as the windows of the store shot out. A witness reported a vehicle rolled to a stop with the driver no longer in it. Munster Police Lt. John Peirick told Region News Tuesday morning, they have determined numerous shots were fired inside and outside of Munster Tobacco & Hookah. Multiple people were taken into the Police Department for questioning, Peirick said. The incident appears to be isolated and there is no threat to the public, Munster Police emphasized. No word on what sparked the incident as of Tuesday morning.

While covering the story last night RNS did see police take two handguns into evidence that were on the ground on the North & South end of the strip mall parking lot along with what appeared to be over a dozen evidence markers for shell casings laid across the lot. Witnesses told Region News as they were finishing last minute Christmas shopping at nearby Target they heard approximately 15 shots being fired from the area. Initially two pops followed by a pause and many more.
