Lake Station Man Charged With Numerous Felonies After Shooting

On February 25, at 11:58 PM, Gary Police Cpl. J. Vonbank responded to a report of a gunshot victim in the parking lot of an apartment building at 591 S. Union Street in Gary. The officer arrived and found the victim, a 30-year-old Gary man seated in his blue GMC SUV. A female witness was applying pressure to his wound, police said.

Cpl. Vonbank spoke with the witness, and she told the officer that her children’s father was upset that she was speaking with the victim.

The suspect, 28, of Lake Station began calling the witness’s phone and texting her but she would not answer, police said. The suspect exited an apartment building twice continuing to call the witness. The second time the suspect came outside the building the victim approached the suspect to speak with him. The men began to argue, and the witness told police that she heard gunshots and her friend returned to the car saying he had been shot by the suspect. After the shooting the suspect fled into the witness’s apartment where their four children were staying.

Once assisting officers arrived, Sgt. A. Boleware was able to establish communication with the suspect via the victim’s cell phone and he was able to get the suspect to exit the apartment without further incident. The suspect was arrested.

The victim was transported to Northlake Methodist Hospital and then transported to a hospital in Chicago to be treated.

On February 27, the Lake County Prosecutor charged the suspect now identified as Devante Mclaurin-Mcnutt, 28, of Lake Station with attempted murder, aggravated battery, battery by means of deadly weapon, and battery resulting in serious bodily injury.

This case is being investigated by Det. O. Vasquez. (219) 881-1210
