Large Amount Of Party Goers Become Hostile In St. John Overnight

Around 10:15 PM, Friday, July 22, St. John Police were dispatched to the 10770 Block of Joliet St in reference to a large party with an initial report of a firearm being pulled out at the party, according to St. John Police.

When officers arrived, they observed a large gathering that was estimated at over 200 young adults. Responding officers smelled marijuana and saw many bottles of alcohol.

Officers were initially met with some resistance from the crowd but the homeowner stepped out of the home and met with officers, police said. The homeowner told officers that the party was a small gathering to celebrate his 19-year-old daughter’s birthday but agreed with officers that the crowd had quadrupled in size and was completely out of hand.

The homeowner agreed that the party was over and yelled to the crowd that they needed to leave. The crowd became even more hostile to officers and the homeowner and officers called for assistance from neighboring police departments for assistance.

Officers from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department, Schererville Police, Dyer Police, Cedar Lake Police, and Crown Point Police responded to assist St. John.

The crowd continued to be hostile to officers and at one point tried to flip a car over in the parking lot, police stated.

After some time, officers were able to clear the area. The homeowner was apologetic and cooperative with police. No injuries were reported and no arrests were made.

St John Police thanked the neighboring agencies for their assistance.
