Man Crashes Car And Flees Scene
Portage Police & Fire responded to 2200 Hamstrom Rd Tuesday morning at 1AM for a report of a vehicle that crashed into a home and the driver fled on foot, according to a police report.
On arrival police found a 2014 Dodge Charger with extensive damage in the front yard of a home. Police began to check the area for the driver when they encountered a slow moving vehicle and began to follow it. Police initiated a traffic stop on it and found the vehicle to be occupied by two males. The passenger who seemed extremely intoxicated stated he called his brother for a ride from the nearby Speedway. When the officer ran his name it matched the owner of the crashed vehicle.
The male passenger now identified as Kyle Piper, 24, of Hanna Indiana, stated he had left his Charger at Speedway because he was to intoxicated to drive. Officers noticed abrasions and scrapes along with him being unsteady on his feet & bloodshot red eyes.
The driver of the vehicle pulled over told police he found Mr. Piper running down Portage Ave when he picked him up and not at the Speedway. Police asked to see Mr. Pipers phone to see recent calls and he had made 5 phone calls to the driver informing him on where to pick him up in the same time frame as the crash.
Police gave Mr. Piper multiple field sobriety tests including a breathalyzer which registered at .141. Mr. Piper stated this was not his first time doing these tests. Mr Piper was placed under arrest and charged with the following:
OWI Prior – Level 6 Felony
OWI Endangering – Class A Misdemeanor
OWI – Class C Misdemeanor
Leaving The Scene Of An Accident – Class B Misdemeanor
