Murder Suspect Apprehended In Merrillville
On 10/4/2023 at approximately 7:50 PM, the Merrillville Police Department obtained
information that Malik Levaughn Bunch was at his residence in the 7700 block of Montana Street, in Merrillville. Bunch is the suspect from a Homicide Investigation from 2022, according to Merrillville Police.
The Lake County Prosecutor’s Office had recently reviewed the case and issued a warrant for his arrest. The warrant is for two counts of Murder and one count of Theft.
Bunch was believed to be armed and dangerous and would possibly flee from law enforcement. Merrillville Patrol Officers quickly responded to the area and approached Bunch’s residence on foot. They observed Bunch outside when they got near his house. Bunch immediately began to run when he observed officers. Officers ordered him to stop, but he refused. Officers were
able to take Bunch into custody after a brief foot pursuit. He was then transported to the Lake County Jail for his active warrants.
Malik Levaughn Bunch is accused of murdering Jéla Burnett Cooper at the Whitcomb Terrance Apartments in March 2022.
