Overnight Fires In EC & Hammond

Firefighters were busy across the entire region last night as multiple structure fires were being fought across the area.

East Chicago Firefighters were fighting three fires Fourth of July night that left at least two displaced. One of those fires was a home on the 5000 block of Tod Ave which was believed to have started inside. Firefighters were on scene a few hours with the assistance of Hammond as one home was a total loss. With loss of manpower and a station shut down they requested assistance to help battle the blaze. There were no injuries reported on these fires. Another fire on Magoun Ave is believed to have started from fireworks in a dumpster and damaged the rear of home significantly leaving it uninhabitable.

Hammond Firefighters fought large flames for the most of the overnight hours near the 4600 block of Sheffield at one of the boarded up homes the City took over recently. Firefighters were called after midnight and encountered a fully involved two story structure. Sheffield remained closed this morning as the home rekindled and partial structure collapse occurred.

  1. The city of Hammond did not take the property. It has been purchased by NICTD (South Shore)
