Police Partner Up For Rail Safety Week Enforcement
The Indiana State Police, in partnership with the Indiana Harbor Belt Railroad Police and NICTD Transit Police, took part in Operation Clear Track on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, as part of the national law enforcement effort to help reduce incidents near highway grade crossings.
Operation Clear Track is part of the Rail Safety Week initiative sponsored by Amtrak Police and Operation Lifesaver, Inc. It is the single largest rail safety enforcement and education effort by law enforcement departments across the country.
Collectively during the four-hour enforcement period targeting both passenger and commercial motor vehicles, especially those carrying hazardous materials, resulted in six citations and 16 written warnings being issued along the railroad tracks in Northwest, Indiana.
National Rail Safety Week (September 20-26, 2021) is a collaborative week-long effort by Operation Lifesaver, Inc. state Operation Lifesaver programs and rail safety partners across the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. Governor Holcomb has also declared September 20-26, 2021, as Indiana Rail Safety Week to coincide with the National Rail Safety Week.
