Portage Bank Robber Caught In Hammond
On Wednesday July 26, 2023 at approximately 12:38 PM, David E. M. Gant of Portage was taken into custody by the Hammond Police Department in reference to the bank robbery occurring on Monday July 24, 2023 at Horizon Bank located at 2650 Willowcreek Road.
Mr. Gant had been quickly identified as the suspect in the robbery after officers were able to view video surveillance footage and recognized him from a previous incident. Mr. Gant’s vehicle was also captured by the Flock Safety license plate readers positioned about the city, shortly after the robbery.
Portage Police Department detectives shared this information with surrounding police agencies and the Hammond Police Department was able to place Mr. Gant’s vehicle within their city using their license plate reader system. Hammond P.D. located the vehicle used in the robbery parked at the Days Inn Hotel (4000 Calumet Avenue) on Tuesday, July 25th with Mr. Gant himself being apprehended at the same location on
Wednesday July 26th.
Portage Police Detectives traveled to Hammond and took custody of Mr. Gant and
placed him into the Porter County Jail.
Mr. Gant has been charged with robbery, a level 5 felony, and is being held without bond.
Portage Police extended their thanks and appreciation to the Hammond Police Department for dedicating numerous hours toward locating Mr. Gant and taking him into custody.
