Portage SWAT Activated Thursday
Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:30pm Portage Police responded to the 2600 block of Monnier Street to conduct a welfare check on an adult male, according to a release.
Family members of the subject contacted police to report the subject was experiencing a psychiatric episode and that he was making homicidal and suicidal threats via text message. It was also suspected the subject may have recently acquired a firearm.
The subject refused to exit his home or communicate with the initial officers on scene. Through their investigation it was determined there was probable cause to believe the subject was a danger to himself and others and he would be taken into custody for the purposes of a psychiatric evaluation. The Portage Police Department SWAT and negotiation teams were activated.
Once a line of communication was established negotiations were successful and the subject voluntarily exited his home, police said. Several weapons were removed from the home although no firearms were located. All police units were clear of the area by 7:30pm and all roads were open. Criminal charges are not expected to be filed at this time.
