Suspect In Fatal Hit & Run Arrested Using LPR’s
On March 17, 2021, at approximately 10:10 p.m., the Lansing Police Department responded to the 17300 Block of Torrence Ave for a report of a hit and run accident, according to Lt. Al Phillips.
Upon arrival, officers located a 62 year-old male subject lying in the street. It appeared that he had been struck by a vehicle. Lansing Paramedics responded to the scene and initiated ALS care and transported the victim to Munster Community Hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries. The Lake County Coroner’s Office identified the subject as Otis Dorsey of Riverdale.
Witnesses on scene advised that the victim was crossing Torrence Ave by L.A. Fitness when he was struck by a dark colored SUV. The offending vehicle did not stop and continued north on Torrence Ave. and then east on 173rd Street.
The Lansing Police Department worked with S.M.A.R.T. (Suburban Major Accident Reconstruction Team) in reconstructing the crime scene.
Lansing’s Criminal Investigations Division was able to work with local businesses to determine the offending vehicle was a black Chevrolet Tahoe. After an extensive search, they were able to obtain a license plate through squad mounted License Plate Readers. With assistance from Hammond Police Department and their squad mounted LPR’s, we were able to locate the offending vehicle. After conducting surveillance for several hours, the suspect returned to his vehicle where he was taken into custody without incident.
The suspect, a 36 year-old male from Calumet City, was transported to Hammond Police Department where he cooperated with investigators. Charges will be pending review from the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.
