Suspect In Stolen Vehicle Hits 66 Year Old Male And State Trooper Car
On July 24th, at approximately 5:12 PM, the Hammond Police Department was dispatched to the 7300 block of Calumet Avenue in reference to a personal injury accident, according to Lt. Steve Kellogg of The Hammond Police. When officers arrived, they learned that a suspect in a stolen vehicle struck a 66-year-old male and fled the scene.
Officers located the victim who was unconscious. The victim has been transported to Christ Hospital in critical condition, Kellogg said. Additional calls came in as the suspect was observed driving onto 80/94. The Indiana State police located the suspect vehicle on the expressway. The suspect struck several vehicles including an Indiana State Police trooper’s vehicle. The suspect abandoned his vehicle and fled on foot across the expressway bridge near Indianapolis Boulevard until he jumped off of the embankment and Hammond officers along with the Indiana State police were the officers that took the suspect into custody.
The suspect has been arrested and is being treated for sustained injuries. No additional injuries have been reported at this time.
