Two Adults & One Juvenile Killed By Train Saturday
On Saturday, 06/26/2021 at approximately 12:51 AM East Chicago Police were dispatched to 4600 Euclid Avenue in reference to a vehicle vs. train accident, according to Deputy Chief Jose Rivera.
Upon arrival officers located the vehicle approximately 200 yards west of the Euclid Avenue train crossing. The vehicle was a 2005 Honda Odyssey minivan and was occupied 6 times. The minivan had extensive damage to the passenger side and the air bags were deployed, Rivera said. Officers immediately began to render aid to the injured juveniles. The 36 year old male driver of East Chicago, the 38 year old female front seat passenger of East Chicago and a rear passenger female approximately 5 years old were all deceased on scene. Three male juveniles ranging in ages of 7 to 10 years old were transported to area hospitals in critical condition. The deceased have now been identified by The Lake County Coroner as Pedro Trinidad 36, of East Chicago, Evelyn Trinidad 5, of East Chicago, and Flor Carrillo 38, of East Chicago.
The official cause of the accident is still being investigated by East Chicago Police. A preliminary investigation indicates that the Honda Odyssey was traveling northbound on 4600 Euclid when the signals, lights and crossing gates indicating a train was approaching activated. The Honda Odyssey is captured on video disregarding and going around the crossing gate which was down and operational. Once the van went around the crossing gate it was struck by the west bound train.
