Two Children Pulled From Lake Michigan

On Tuesday, July 12, 2022 at approximately 2:10 PM Gary Beach Patrol units and Gary Fire Department units were advised of two children in the lake drowning near Marquette Beach, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield.

One child who is a 14-year-old female was recovered from the lake by Gary lifeguards but the other child a 9-year-old female was not visible.

Gary Officers along with Beach Patrol units and Gary Fire Department personnel began a chain search in the water while the Lake County Sheriff’s Department helicopter did an overhead search. The helicopter was able to spot the child and direct officers in the water to her. The 9-year-old female was recovered from the lake, CPR was started and she was immediately loaded into a waiting ambulance for transport to the hospital. The 9-year-old female was later pronounced deceased at the hospital, according to Indiana Conservation Officers. 

Other assisting units who were there: Lake County Marine Unit, Indiana Conservation Officers, Portage Marine Unit, Merrillville Fire Department, Hobart Fire Department, Crown Point Fire Department, Cedar Lake Fire Department, and Coast Guard.
