Two Fatal Crashes Thursday In Gary
On Thursday, May 12, 2022 at approximately 7:02 PM Gary Police Officers were dispatched to the area of East 7th Avenue and East Dunes Highway regarding a car versus train collision, according to Lt. Dawn Westerfield.
Upon arrival officers observed a vehicle that was partially wedged under the South Shore Train. The 2006 silver Honda Accord had traveled in the path of the moving train disregarding train crossing gates. The driver a 33-year-old male from Gary was declared deceased on scene by the Lake County Coroner’s office. Identification is still pending.
At approximately 8:55 PM Gary Police Officers were also dispatched to the 2300 block of East 15th Avenue for a head-on vehicle crash with injuries, Westerfield stated.
Upon arrival officers observed a 2015 white Ford Fusion and a 2009 black Chevy Cobalt involved in the crash. Multiple people were transported to hospitals for treatment including one being airlifted out from the scene by UCAN, Westerfield told RNS. One 40-year-old female was declared deceased on scene. The victim was identified by The Lake County Coroner as Alexis Izeta.
The investigation is ongoing as to what made one vehicle enter the other vehicle’s path of travel.
