Two Stolen Cars & Gun Recovered After Overnight Break Ins In St. John / Dyer
Shortly after 4:00 a.m. Thursday, St. John officers were headed to assist Dyer PD with reports that were coming in about several vehicles having been rummaged through in High Point Prairie. St. John Police K-9 was on duty and responded to the area to assist in a potential track, according to St. John Police PIO Roger Patz.
A short time later St. John officers saw a black Mercedes and a white Honda in the area on 93rd Ave and Sheffield. Officers gave chase and the Mercedes crashed at 81st Ave and Sheffield and the two occupants ran to and got in the white Accord. A vehicle pursuit ensued and five occupants of the Accord bailed and ran from the vehicle on Glenwood Dyer Road in the area of TJ Meat Packing, Police told RNS. Dyer, St. John, Lake County Police and St. John K-9 searched the area but were not able to apprehend the suspects.
St. John was able to locate the owner of the Mercedes which had been stolen from the 9100 Block of Columbia Ave in St. John. The owner had moved the car for his wife a short time before the theft occurred, leaving the keys inside the vehicle. He was not aware that the car had been stolen and recovered. A stolen firearm was recovered from the Mercedes as well that did not belong to owner of the car, Patz stated.
Two additional vehicles in the 9100 Block of Columbia were rummaged through, reports said.
The vehicle that the suspects ran from on Glenwood Dyer Road was later determined to have been stolen from DuPage County, IL.
