Update – Suspect In Custody From Hammond Shooting

The Hammond Police Department is investigating a tragic incident that occurred on May 3rd at approximately 5:23 PM in the 800 block of 165th St, Hammond Police stated in a release Thursday. A white box truck pulled up alongside a BMW and fired multiple rounds into the side of the BMW. The driver was struck and transported for medical attention. Unfortunately, the man died from his injuries. The Lake County Coroner identified the man as Rajesh Bhagwandeen, 26, of Hammond.

Hammond Detective and Evidence Technicians worked around the clock and were able to locate the suspect’s vehicle abandoned in Hammond. Detectives recovered information that led them to a person of interest in Bridgeview, Illinois. Working in cooperation with the Bridgeview Police Department, Detectives were able to take this person of interest into custody for this senseless act of violence. Police are asking anyone with additional information on this incident to please come forward.

Hammond Police thanked the Bridgeview Police Department for their cooperation in apprehending this individual. Police also want to assure the community that they are working diligently to keep the streets safe and will continue to do everything in our power to prevent incidents like this from occurring.
