Munster — Around 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 14, 2026, Munster firefighters responded to a reported structure fire in the 9600 block of White Oak Avenue.
Upon arrival, initial police units observed heavy smoke coming from the rear of the residence. One occupant had safely evacuated but advised that two cats remained inside the home.
Fire crews arrived to find heavy smoke and active flames at the rear of the structure. Mutual aid units from Lansing assisted in fire suppression efforts. During the operation, firefighters located and rescued both cats from the basement.
The animals were treated on scene, cleaned, and provided oxygen before being safely returned to their owners.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. No injuries were reported. Assisting Munster on scene was Highland, Lansing, Griffith, Thornton, Calumet City, and Superior.
