Orlando Turner Jr., 33, of Merrillville, has been charged in Lake Superior Court after Merrillville police alleged he fled a traffic stop while riding an electric bicycle under the influence of alcohol.

According to court documents, police observed Turner riding an E-Bike near the area of Taft Street and 61st Avenue shortly before 11:30 p.m. on May 31. The bicycle allegedly had no rear reflector or rear red light and was observed weaving from the shoulder across the center line into oncoming traffic multiple times.

Court documents state Turner stopped after police activated emergency lights. Officers allegedly observed that his speech was slurred, his eyes were watery, he was swaying while standing, and an odor of alcoholic beverages was coming from his breath.

According to court records, Turner was instructed to remain at the scene while officers checked his information. Police allege he instead rode away on the E-Bike and continued southbound while disregarding emergency lights and sirens. Court documents state officers eventually boxed him in between a patrol vehicle and a guardrail, forcing him to stop before taking him into custody.

Police further alleged Turner endangered his own life due to his level of intoxication.
