Sonia Slyvette Cazy, 48, of Portage, has been charged in Porter Superior Court following a road rage incident that allegedly involved a handgun near the intersection of State Road 149 and U.S. 6.
According to court documents, a woman was driving northbound on State Road 149 with her husband and two children when she noticed a gray Kia Sorento following closely behind her vehicle. The woman told investigators she attempted to increase the distance between the vehicles by applying her brakes.
Court documents state that as both vehicles approached the intersection of State Road 149 and U.S. 6, the woman could hear the other driver yelling. The woman allegedly yelled back for the driver to “stop acting stupid” and stated that she had children in her vehicle.
According to court documents, the Kia Sorento then pulled alongside the family’s vehicle and the female driver allegedly yelled while waving a black handgun equipped with an optic sight. Investigators noted the firearm was not pointed directly at the family but was allegedly pointed in the direction of other vehicles traveling on the roadway.
The woman described the driver as a Black female with long black hair, glasses, and a white T-shirt. She called 911 and followed the vehicle until it turned into a local business.
Police later made contact with the driver, identified as Cazy. According to court documents, Cazy admitted she had been involved in a road rage incident and claimed the other vehicle had “brake checked” her. Cazy allegedly told investigators that when she pulled alongside the vehicle she asked the driver why she had brake checked her and claimed the male passenger made a gun gesture with his fingers.
Court documents state Cazy denied that a firearm was involved in the confrontation but acknowledged that her husband’s handgun was underneath the front passenger seat of her vehicle.
Investigators recovered a Sig Sauer P365 handgun with an optic sight from the Kia Sorento. Court documents state there was no round in the chamber, but the magazine was fully inserted and contained approximately 20 rounds of 9mm ammunition.
According to court documents, investigators also reviewed cellphone video recorded by occupants of the other vehicle. In the video, a person can allegedly be heard saying, “okay she pulled out her gun.” Investigators noted the driver of the Kia Sorento appeared to be holding an object outside the window, although the video quality made it difficult to determine exactly what the object was.
