Nicholas James Lovig, 39, of Cedar Lake, is facing a felony charge after police say he fired a handgun outside his residence during a domestic dispute early Friday morning.

Officers were dispatched shortly after midnight on June 5 to the area near the 7200 block of West 145th Avenue following reports of a domestic disturbance and shots fired. Upon arrival, police located Lovig and a woman near a vehicle parked adjacent to the residence.

According to court records, Lovig told officers he had observed a black truck drive by and fire several shots and denied owning a firearm. Police, however, reported locating a .45-caliber shell casing on a rear patio at the residence.

Court documents state a nearby resident who was walking her dog told police she overheard an argument and observed Lovig on the back patio firing two rounds from a handgun toward an open field located west of the residence. The witness told investigators she could clearly identify Lovig as the person who fired the weapon and called 911 after the incident.

Police reported Lovig was taken into custody and continued denying he fired the gun. According to court records, officers later obtained and executed a search warrant at the residence, where they recovered a loaded Springfield .45-caliber handgun, a .223-caliber rifle with magazines and ammunition and a bag of kratom.

Court documents state a child was inside the residence at the time of the incident, and the Indiana Department of Child Services was notified.
